Shorewood Print of the Month

Illuminated Manuscript (1430)

Shah Basanqur, who lived in Herat (North East Persia) and commissioned this miniature, was interested in romantic tales and gathered the best painters to his court to make and illustrate books. The picture tells the story of a servant girl called Gulnar who is shown looking out of the upper window of the palace of Ardavan. She falls in love with Ardashir, the future sovereign of Persia, as soon as she sees him enter on horseback. The design of this miniature is highly intricate with complex coloured patterns filling every inch of the painted surface. Great attention to detail has been shown in the depiction of the trees, bushes and flowers that adorn the tranquil palace gardens.
